Really interesting book so far, but different than expected. It’s often recommended alongside Red Rising & while both are sci-fi, their styles couldnt be more different.
Project Hail Mary leans on scientific language & detailed explanations to avoid plot holes. Red Rising is more conceptual, with less verifiable science.
This feels like a modern space story, and Red Rising is more action-packed science adventure.

The writing from Oro and Grim’s perspectives feels weaker. Every few pages they’re declaring how much they love Isla or giving grand speeches about how amazing she is. It feels inauthentic and not how men actually talk. Because their thoughts revolve entirely around her, they come across as one-dimensional—more like accessories to the FMC than fully developed MMCs. I fear the 1st book may be the strongest

This was the cringiest first chapter of a book I have ever read. I would have DNFd if this wasn’t a bookclub book - I’m glad I battled through to chapter 10 since the world is interesting and magical system unique, but it’s been an uphill battle since the MMC literally called himself “daddy” to the FMC ☠️
We’ll see how I handle the rest of the book.
