Something about her cry roused him enough to send out a surge of ellixen-but instead of using it to free himself, he blasted away a tentacle that Viri hadn't seen coming toward her. The monster shrieked in pain, and then Reeve's mouth opened in a gasp as it squeezed him mercilessly;, his eyes rolling to the back of his head as the beast dragged him under the water again-but this time, he didn't reappear.

"Is this where I say I told you so?" Reeve asked, his lips twitching as he flicked the ring on her finger.
She swatted his hand away. "Arrogance is unattractive."
A knowing smirk. "Apparently not to you."

Seeing her trepidation, Reeve's expression gentled into something Viri refused to identify, his voice soft as he said, "Do you really think Id let anything happen to you? You're safe with me, Little Shadow. Always."
Vir's legs wobbled at the promise in his words, and then wobbled even more when he carefully but purposefully untangled their fingers.

"What do I get if I win?"
"My magic hands making you hot.”
"And if you win?"

"Thank me by saying nice things at my funeral. I might be able to accept that you're following some balf-baked plan to save the kids, but Darik is going to kill me for letting you get away," Meera said flatly, then jerked

"Tell me you didn't."
He aliced a one-shouldered shrug. "We were young. Fearless."
“You were stupid," Viri corrected.

A teasing smile touched the corner of Reeve's mouth. "Is that concern I see in your eyes, Little Shadow?"
Viri wiped her face clear. "No. Just disappointment that it worked.”
Reeve huffed out a laugh. "And we're back to lying."

"Are you still on your guard?"
Reeve chuckled darkly and answered for her. "Don't worry, she still hates me. Apparently more than ever-her words."
"Tha's not what I asked," Soren said, before pointedly add-ing, "And it's clear to anyone with eyes that she doesn't."
"Anyone with eyes needs to get their vision checked," Viri sated flatly. "And I'm a hunter—I'm always on my guard."

The pain—
Just when she was sure she couldn't stand it another moment, the agony vanished, leaving her collapsed and panting on the couch with Reeve leaning over her, his free hand cupping her uninjured cheek, his silver eyes edged with worry.
"If that was only a fraction of what the poison made you fee, how the hell did you last so long?"
"I’m no stranger to pain. The more you feel it, the less it hurts.

"Go on," she urged, and when he still refused, she rolled hat eyes at the concern she saw in his expression and grabbed has hand herself. "Swallow the cure, or I'll make you."
His voice was quiet, just for her, as he said, "I don't want to hurt you."
She braced herself against everything those words made her feel and bluntly said, "I've survived worse than this from you.
Just do it already."

"You can't have a pet bunny.Bunnies are cure. and sweet and-and-floppy, and you're evil incarnate.This goes against the laws of nature."
"Firstly, thank you for implying I'm not floppy.flattered you noticed." He winked,causing Viri's cheeks to warm even as she scowled in response. "Secondly, 'evil incarnate' is a step up from 'asshole, so I'll take it. And thirdly, Walnut isn't mine. He just likes me more than most."

"Let me restate," Viri bit out. "Stand still, and don't speak"

Viri shifted her hands upward, deliberately grazing his sides, and this time, an audible squeak left him.

Reeve, it seemed, didn't need an explanation, not when he was so obviously entertained by her discomfort.
"Careful, I might be contagious," he said, his silver eyes dancing. "Watch out or I'll grow on you."
Not missing his meaning, Viri deadpanned, "I guarantee
I'm immune."

"Call me paranoid, but what happens if someone notices walking me like a dog on a leash? Reeve drawled, liting him hands and gesturing to the length of golden cord stretching fem him back to her.
Thinking fast, she freed one of his wrists and wrapped the remaining length of cord around her own before grabbing his still-bound hand and twining their fingers together.

A startled, choked laugh left Viri without her permission. She quickly stifled it at the look Soren sent her, and staunchly ignored the pleased light in Reeve's eyes.
"Stop antagonizing each other"

Both Soren and Reeve spoke at once.

"You want to know where the Reaper Priest is?"
"Yes," Viri hissed. "I've only asked about a thousand times." His lips twitched. "So dramatic. I missed that about you" Viri felt a stab of pain, but it was quickly replaced by anger.
“Three seconds and I leave again. This time for good. One. Two-"
"You used to be so much more patient," Reeve said, as if she were the one being difficult.

"Time is a construct, so waste' is a matter of interpretation."

"No deals," she said, her voice firm.
He ignored her. "We'll play a game. An answer for an answer"

"I'm not—" Viri stopped abruptly, blinking as his words processed. "What?"
He gestured toward her cheek and repeated, the words more
clipped this time, "Who. Hurt. You?"
“You did, Reeve," she snarled, relieved that her fury kept her voice from cracking.

“I heard you'll only speak to one person, but that's evidently not the case, so—"
"Oh, it's definitely the case," Reeve said.
Viri pointed to herself. "Clearly not."
He just looked at her, arching a brow, until realization barrelled into her.
She was the person he'd said he would speak to.

"My master?" He laughed darkly, the sound like a caress against her skin, making her fight another shiver. "I bow to no one, Little Shadow. Never have, never will."
