The overly perfect, child prodigy, FMC is so insufferable that this has taken longer for me to get into than a ‘catch the killer/ who dunnit’ normally takes me. It feels like every trope is being troped to the max without developing why or adding to the story and it’s a bit of an eye roll but now that they’re actively investigating the case I’m hopeful it’ll pick up.

These mysteries are an absolute delight. I can’t wait to see what this ends up leading up to. Also- I can’t believe they mentioned the head of the family got caught up in a weird cult and no one brought up that cult when looking into murdering motives? Like come onnnn

this is such a delightful read and is getting me out of a bad reading slump.

Personally it was very obvious how story 1 and 2 were gonna connect. I’m still in story 3 and have 0 clue how this one will connect.

This is the most invested I’ve been in a book in a while.

As someone who grew up in western/ upper NY I appreciate the Tops reference a little too much. It’s no Wegmans… but it’ll do ;)

Anyone else think it’s a bit strange that a man who only had sex once while losing his virginity has restraints ready to go and a custom built headboard to use them?


Also I see a lot of digesting Kyle’s feelings from when he was gone, but they’re just never gonna talk about Rylie’s mom dying and her needing her best friend/ processing her feelings?

I’m loving how fast paced this is and how campy it comes off alluding to several pop culture slashers that are easily recognizable. Picturing the characters from the support group as the grown women from Yellowjackets makes this even better.

While I’m engaged enough to want to know where this goes, it’s not an addictive turn pager for me

It bothers me that we don’t get Taylor’s birth story through her POV. Also- wasn’t baby due in December, born 4 weeks before Thanksgiving, and no need to go to the hospital from being premature? Okay, Janet.

This one is so much better than the first- you could almost think they were written by different authors.

BUT if Taylor is supposed to be laying low avoiding her bio dad because of the returning to him at 21 thing, doesn’t that ruin a majority of the plot of book one because why would she ever be considered for a public position as CEO/ married off?

This is prolly the first time I’ve had an accurate prediction for a Marrs book- I f*ing KNEWWWW that gaslighting mofo Simon was responsible for Billy and based on how chapter 20 ended- 21 will show how. (Watch me still me wrong)

Okay so sister’s name is Emma- but still sticking with that guess. Also low key LOVE how Becca’s ringtone is “Every Breath You Take” by The Police. That’s definitely a IYKYK to Dead in the Water. At least to me- probably not intentional since DITW came out after.

Okay so my Henry guess was a bit unhinged but my new theory is that the battered woman Becca keeps pictures of is a sister that died due to DV and her mum and her raise Maisie, said sister’s daughter. I also believe this sister is Aubrey- the woman our killer started to reflect on before his thoughts were interrupted

Haven’t gotten as far as I would want to in this yet. It was the winning choice for my new John Marrs book club. Based on a woman saying this one has major spoilers for GS and what the killer just said about himself I’m wondering if the killer is Laura’s dearest Henry…. I’ll be wrong of course. Just enjoy guessing 😅

After Helena’s last chapter- has she been working with Laura all this time? Or is it Damon’s dad? At first I thought Laura and Damon could maybe be connected from foster care (she noted his last name was familiar) but with the age gap I don’t think so. I think that familiarity came from helping his mom with suicide or something, cuz of course Laura did.

Okay this is really bothering me this- isn’t the point of multiple POV’s that you get multiple FIRST PERSON POV’s? Melissa’s and Helena’s chapters are a mix of 3rd and 1st and it’s really bothering me.

John Marrs books are my drug of choice, ever since Keep it in the Family. So naturally, after Good Samaritan and this summary mentioning the return of a controversial character you just KNOW I had to start this to see what that bitch Laura is up to. I’m onto chapter 15 and I hear my flabbers will be gasted when I finish 20.

1. I don’t appreciate how the book cover says they live in a basement and they actually live in a garage. Continuity matters SO much.

2. The plot is starting to fill in information as if we’ve been over it but we haven’t. Ie. She’s stealing her dad’s train pass now but as far as she’s known her whole life until now he hates the trains and doesn’t travel by them so how would she know where to find it?

I’m gonna need to bum one of Laura’s cigarettes while I process what I’ve just read and been put through and to prepare me to start part 3. Holy shiitake mushrooms.

Officially onto part two. Both POV’s are caught up now so I’m curious to see where else this will go.

After the story about her dad and 2 sisters I was like this may be too dark even for me, idk how much more of this bleakness I can take then the final chapter from Lara’s POV happened and I’ve started Ryan’s POV and this change has reignited my interest. TBF I was never expecting Steven to be Steven so that didn’t surprise me but knowing Marrs I know the best is yet to come.
