This is very cute, but the diary format is a little much for a novel-length work.

Can someone who has read this explain why Iris can’t tell Ruth about her relationship with Digby? It’s not because he’s a spy, because she was already hiding it before she knew that. I’m sure there’s a reason I simply missed, but I don’t want to go back and try to find it.

Much richer prose than I had the ability to appreciate when I was 11 (or however old I was when I read this over and over). Great reading so far.

A nostalgia read — I must have read this book five times when I was a kid, so when it was in some Kindle sale or other for 99 cents I indulged. Found when I started it today that I recall a lot of the details. The only Simak book I remember liking even more than this one was “They Walked Like Men.”

Assigned for work; completely vapid and vague thus far. It’s said nothing, but said it several times over. Made blanket assertions of the “everyone knows that…” sort that aren’t even true. Business books are always bad, but this one promises to be particularly so

Totally compelling but wow, the most obnoxious man-child of a narrator. One does grow a little tired of his stupidity and misogyny. I’m looking forward to whatever horrible thing is going to happen to him, because the little prick deserves it.

Some of this is so familiar--down to the word--that I wonder if it is repeated verbatim in A God in Ruins, which I read a couple years ago. Or, perhaps I actually read *this* book before, but I don't think so. Anyhow, given the themes of this book, the persistent feeling of deja vu is rather apt.

Honestly feels rather whiny so far. A lot of railing and straw-man generalizations about “young people” and “old people”. Hoping for more trenchant insight to come.

Suffers from some overwriting (e.g. nobody just smells anything, they “take the fragrance deep into their lungs”) and no sign of a plot yet, only heaps of backstory. Still, a sufficiently unusual setting for the WWII portion of the story that I’m happy to carry on.
