"Promise me."
Gaunt thought of the letter he had tried to write that evening. He had given up after four words. The sheet of paper that might have told Ellwood how he felt was still attached to his stationary set. It had been hopeless to love Ellwood because Ellwood didn't love him back; and now it was hopeless even though he did.
"Yes " said Gaunt. "I promise."
