Dang it! I forgot this author was a dude! I kept on cringing, thinking, why would a woman write that shit?

Anyway, the story is still entertaining, even though the incorrect info about “Arabs” is really pissing me off. Why would he write so extensively on a culture he clearly knows little about?

BUT, if you’re gonna make a broad statement about an ancient alien race that’s been studied for decades, maybe consult an archeologist before making statements like, “We know they must have been a little larger than us, judging by the scale of the structures…”

Why didn’t Weir just make the main character Mark Watney again. This is basically the Martian II. Same voice, but no swearing. Still sciencing the 🤬 out of everything. It’s getting good, just not sure why this character isn’t Mark. In my mind he looks and sounds like Matt Damon. 😜

The male “teen” character from the way future is more sexist and old fashioned than a 40-year-old from the fifties. I’m supposed to like him?

I didn’t know who the author was (wasn’t paying attention.) I thought I saw a male name, so I expected the female POV to be horrible. But as I read, I kept on thinking, the author must be female! Because it’s good!

Unfortunately, the author doesn’t understand how menstrual cramps work, and that’s when I finally checked the author’s name. Yup, only a guy would write about cramps like that. Still good tho

Well, all the characters are old and that sucks. The plot was just about to FINALLY get interesting, but now I am super annoyed with the way Bobbie is being portrayed. It seems like she’s getting treated like noob, which she is not. She’s besties with a ton of powerful people, and lead a ton of successful things. And now they’re making her get jealous of Holden. It’s contrived bull poop.

This just isn’t as good as the first two. Too many flat new characters. But I plan on finishing. I’m guessing this would be better if I didn’t know what was beyond the gate already.

This book is dragging. I’m giving it a few more chapters since I normally read fiction, but it feels like the author was more interested in a beefy word count than a cohesive story. 🥱
