GO FROM THE INVESTIGATOR IN THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE TO THE MOM THE DAY OF BEARS DISAPPEARANCE RIGHT BEFORE SHE OPENS HER HUSBANDS ROOM AND THEN BACK TO THE SLAUGHTHOUSE THAT MAN WAS/IS CHEEEEAAAATING AND SHES DRUUUUUUNK OHOHOHO I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO BEAR YOU CAN'T FOOL ME STORM COMING AND GETTING IN BOATS? DRUNK ANGRY WOMAN? YEAH. YEAH. OKAY.

"I have a cabin up north" yeah okay continue telling me about your backstory while I figure out where Barbara is buddy. I'm pickin up what you're putting down here.

I can't get over how much I love the idea of a mystery being told mostly through background. I don't know how to put it. The plot revolves around the missing Van Laar kids but this book really doesn't feel like it's about them. I'm looking forward to seeing if my hunches are correct through all the character analysis.

Not what I was expecting from getting this recommended to me so much.

The relationship between Mabel and Persephone is such a shining light - the mirrors between them are so interesting!

I understand why Elsie isn't likable in a lot of ways but I unfortunately understand and relate to her. I'm also not bothered by "believability" in this novel as I feel that the absurd setup had led into an equally absurd and enjoyable story. Slower than I was expecting but really light and nice.

Is Daphne like... real? Lmao I don't think she is but she's fun I like her

I am almost disgusted by how much I relate to Elsie so far. I love her. I am so in tune with her and my best friend mirrors Daphne so well so far. It's awesome.

"This is a love story" proceeds to tell me about how its platonic female love... I am so very seated... I really like the voice of our main character so far as well.

"You can no more understand it than you can smoke a painting of pipe." HORRIBLE analogy. You can smoke a painting of a pipe, actually, meaning you can tell me what the hell you're looking at and let me decide how I see it in my mind instead of lazily telling me "you'd never get it".

This book would have really benefitted from just dedicating itself to telling us the story. The amount of times now that the main character has told me that there is "no way" to explain or express what they experienced, it's just putting me off. At some point it feels like you are gatekeeping your own worldbuilding. I get that it's in space and not real, but this is a bothersome quality of the book overall.

I'm increasingly fed up with how often the main character will mention a well known saying in modern times but then have to follow it up with "but I don't know what that is". So you're fucking telling me that this civilization has been like this for How long and those sayings haven't been coopted into current culture? This book is so bad.

Still can't get through a single chapter without mentioning sex. It's overdone and is not serving any real purpose in this story. It's making me so angry honestly! Sex can have a purpose! It genuinely seems as though it's included for NO reason MOST of the time in this book. This book would be considerably shorter and easier to get through if it wasn't so prevalent.

Has there been literally a SINGLE chapter that doesn't mention sex, fucking, or orgasms? I'm so over it. I'm genuinely so over how much sex is in this book.

MC spent the first parts of this book mentioning how she's a schoolmistress/teacher and literally just mentioned "but then again I wasn't good in school". So which is it. I really dislike this book. Hate our main character. Really hate the prose.

I am so sad to admit that I think this book is turning me away from Alexis Hall's other works. I'm just not a fan of the prose. Her other works are not a priority for me to get to unfortunately. I wanted so badly to love this.

I could say many wonderful things about this book so far. I won't because I do not like this book at all. I'm so bored and unenthused.

Where the hell is the kissing coming from. Weird. Real strange. Don't love this voice.

Elodie is actually insanely real and human. Anyone who says she's a bad character or bad mom from the start is fundamentally misunderstanding her as a character and person. Her concerns are understandable, even if what she does about it isn't the best course of action. She is absolutely so far from being a villain to Jude at this point.

Elodie is effectively a child who never had support before. She is flawed.

When does the "buddy comedy" part of this come in? Is this book supposed to be funny?? I mean I guess it isn't not funny but I haven't so much as chuckled. The alien isn't charming, the humans aren't charming, no character is worth investing in so far... I'm really lost on this one.

This book isn't bad but it's really shoving things in your face. Extremely tell don't show. I understand this is mostly due to the limited perspective of John but it just makes me think that nearly any other character would have been a more interesting lens to see this story through.

Really not a fan of the worldbuilding happening. I don't love how we, the reader, are explained things. It's obvious to readers what is going on and while it makes sense that John wouldn't know that info, I really don't like this pacing of painstakingly explaining simple economics and history and causation and whatnot. John is not a likable character, his desire to survive makes no real sense.

Absolutely gorgeous book. Really enjoying it. I bought a physical copy at around 34%

I wish I liked this main character but I really don't.

I LOVE the caravaners. I am honestly shocked at how much I am enjoying this story!! Really curious about the lore in this world and I haven't even finished this book yet but I'm stoked for the next installement.
