When does the "buddy comedy" part of this come in? Is this book supposed to be funny?? I mean I guess it isn't not funny but I haven't so much as chuckled. The alien isn't charming, the humans aren't charming, no character is worth investing in so far... I'm really lost on this one.

This book isn't bad but it's really shoving things in your face. Extremely tell don't show. I understand this is mostly due to the limited perspective of John but it just makes me think that nearly any other character would have been a more interesting lens to see this story through.

Really not a fan of the worldbuilding happening. I don't love how we, the reader, are explained things. It's obvious to readers what is going on and while it makes sense that John wouldn't know that info, I really don't like this pacing of painstakingly explaining simple economics and history and causation and whatnot. John is not a likable character, his desire to survive makes no real sense.

Absolutely gorgeous book. Really enjoying it. I bought a physical copy at around 34%

I LOVE the caravaners. I am honestly shocked at how much I am enjoying this story!! Really curious about the lore in this world and I haven't even finished this book yet but I'm stoked for the next installement.

Definitely a YA novel, not in a bad way!!! In fact, I really appreciate the tone and such of this novel so far, and even moreso love the worlbuilding!

Romantasy authors suuuuuuuuuuuuuuure love scent and smells in these stories.

The main character is a little typical for these kinds of stories but I don't find her to be unlikable at all. The main love interest is also growing on me. I am usually not a huge fan of his archetype but perhaps the setting or handling of the relationship is putting a more enjoyable spin on it? Uncertain but not displeased.

I think it's time to admit that I cannot stand a man reading a female character's line. I do not like the intonation and tone that so many male voice actors do in these audiobook reads for female characters.

Why are all the male characters Like That.

Also the lore in this book is repulsively written. Lmao what a bastardization.

Questioning the differences and potential overlap of the questions:
- What is necessary?
- What is good?
- What is right?
Is what is necessary good? Is it right? Is the right thing a good thing? Is it necessary? Interesting philosophical queries.

Rosemary is the woooooooorst. Of course she's highly regarded in historical context, she's the reason for Miriam's downfall, or at least a large aspect of it. The catalyst, perhaps.

Hooooooooly cow I cannot get over how much I am enjoying the interludes attempting to discredit Miriam's experiences. History is written by the winners, and Miriam obviously didn't win. The fact that the account exists at all in this universe is a testament to that in its own right. Miriam's manuscript was allowed to be published, but only with the understanding that she is wrong.

An unreliable narrator is a lovable one. I adore the differences in her own accounts vs the history and context provided in the notes. It really brings to question what is true and what is fiction in this narrative. I enjoy the break reminding the reader to remain emotionally distanced from Miriam's account due to possible inaccuracies.

The inserts of information attempting to discredit Miriam are really interesting to me. I feel like it's showing two truths sometimes. For example, the mentioning of the orphanages not being organized from Miriam's point of view, but the info stating that government efforts were being made to care for them. I feel like both were likely true.

The amount that Miriam dismisses her own thoughts is exceeding and very relatable. I really enjoy the way she dismisses her own humanizing thoughts and how that continues to characterize her every time she says "it doesn't matter" or "well, anyway..." after going through a really interesting piece of information about her own thoughts.

I really love the structure of this book. The interjections with "corrections" or additional information are exciting and engaging!
