Mr Murray continues on the atonement in chapter 2 by defining the specific terms of the work of Christ (sacrifice, propitiation, reconciliation, and redemption) under the general heading of obedience, specifically using “passive” and “active” obedience, and ensuring his reader knows that the whole of Christ’s work was both active and passive.

I appreciate that Gouge begins this volume on family with pressing upon the reader a Biblical understanding of the fear of the Lord.

“A true fear of God makes us respect more what God requires and commands than what our corrupt heart desires and suggests.” (13)

A great one-liner from the book to summarize the disunity between Baxter and Owen:

“The problem is always with the other man.”

The root of their differences began with varying backgrounds, personality differences, and understandings of Scripture. However, these differences made up the proverbial gunpowder that was ignited by their theological convictions regarding, in short, soteriology and church polity.

“The written word destroyed the relationship of two men who had never even met.”

How true it is that the tongue is a fire, and how sobering it is to see that sadly played out in the lives of Owen and Baxter.

Update, Owen and Baxter both would have benefited from some therapy or perhaps a good game of RISK
