dr. fauci being involved in both the ebola outbreaks of the mid-2010s and the covid-19 pandemic is insane. what a long and exhausting career that man has had.

it's very hard not to read this and think about the similarities to the original covid-19 pandemic.

what a humane and thought provoking way to explain how a virus can spread. preston uses key terms and phrases to show that love and humanity are exploited by disease by accident and cause harm in ways people did not dream of or mean to. what a kind way to should the blame solely on the soulless virus, not the people who are just trying to show love to those around them.

"ebola virus moves from one person to the next by following the deepest and most personal ties of love, care, and duty that join people to one another and most clearly define us as human. the virus exploits the best parts of human nature as a means of travel from one person to the next. in this sense the virus is a true monster."

i should have known i would be irritated reading this book knowing how irksome the hypocrisy of "christians" really is. what the hell do you mean you shunned a woman for adultery and then have the gall to wear her needlework because she's the best at it in the town. GIRL.

i refuse to work in micro for several reasons (mainly my paranoia), but i relate so much to karl johnson finding viruses beautiful. i've worked in hematology for 5 years and have seen many examples of leukemia/blasts under a microscope. on a realistic note, you know that these cells are killing patients from the inside out, however, when you see them under a scope, some are so beautiful you can't help but be in awe.

so interesting to see people complain about situations they had agency in. the ability to whine and moan about something that you can completely control your involvement in after the fact is such a first world problem. it's fascinating to witness. contemporary novels are intriguing in that way i guess. i don't feel bad for any of these characters. the daughter, father, AND mother could use some reality i think.

i'm convinced that modern women who want to live in a tradfem society don't read enough. it becomes glaringly obvious that women pre-modern day would LOVE to live in a modern society where they have the ability to do what they want without living under the thumb of a man. you engage with any work such as this or actually THINK about what a diagnosis of "hysteria" meant and some of y'all want that back? ok.

"her anxiety over her new position in life, or perhaps the stimulation of this man's presence, had been enough to make her believe that she at last possessed that marvelous passion which, until then, had been like a great rosy-plumaged bird soaring in the splendors of poetic skies. and now she could not bring herself to believe that the calm in which she was living was the happiness she had dreamed of."
