During a daring delivery after dark The Belgica runs aground. Supplies are dumped in order to salvage ship. A 3 year long dictionary translation of the native tongue to English is entrusted to make its way back to Europe. Restocking of the supplies will be the last humans this crew sees for awhile

The crew on the brink of mutiny. Chilean navy needed for back up? Lots of similarities between this voyage and that of The Wager. Glad I was able to read the wager first so I could acknowledge the places I'm reading about in that of familiarity. The Belgica meets up with a coal ship but are they only getting coal?

This shipwreck island is bare and battered by winds. Still in a geographic area where the weather is fierce, the island seems to give little hope to anyone who has had the misfortune of landing there

The wager has fallen behind. As a large storm sweeps them to their rocky doom an island pops out of the distance. It's a race to leave the sinking ship and enter the next phase of their ship wreak journey. Land.

The passage around Cape Horn is taking it toll in the crews. Sailing below the 50th latitude sounds as close to hell as you can get while still being alive. Scurvy. Rats. Impromptu medicines. All caused more death than guns, knives or battles. When they finally believed they made it far enough to turn north and escape the weather. Turns out, they're only half way there.
