if this book continues doing what it's doing i believe it may be the one i tell everyone under the sun to read. as a journalist, he's able to contextualize each piece of this so well that i imagine it'd be incredibly illuminating yet super easy to swallow for people without any exposure to chicano gang culture

as a reflective chronological narrative yes this all works but man would a good deal of these be labeled stinkers if viewed as poems without context

so i picked this up as a complete blind read at my local library, noting only the author's name and the first three sentences. now i'm afraid i may be reading my first ever romance. this being said, it is just gritty and questionably between delusion or possible paranormal aspects that i set aside my fears and saunter on. prose varies from kinda awesome to corny boots

in times like these i'm honestly just grateful to read a book so committed to sounding beautiful, even if it's often a little overzealous. though i still can't tell if the fast & furious thing is an ongoing bit or an accident

putting a pin in how the intro's way of noting visual details implies an aim for the 'cinematic feel' that distracts so many modern works. much prose feels like one afraid to overwrite editing down to end up with dissonantly flowery underwriting, most due to sentence portioning & reliance on common phrase, but some parts i really like! waiting for the character voices to be distinguished in some way other than humor.

having a great time. the lack of chapter breaks works wonderfully when it's a story so tempting to finish in one, so easy to be sucked in by. but daddy has work to do

i returned with the intention of at least making it midway through chapter 2, read "the [...] decisive decision," immediately closed it and picked up a different book. we'll try again later

this page count coyly pretends this book doesn't have SIX prefaces. beyond that, i am allowing this a great deal of grace on account of the circumstances under which it was written & am determined to finish due to its cultural & historical importance. nevertheless, i feel as if i'm reading man who believes he has transcended the limited scope of typical men speaking on women through google translate.
