A fascinating look at the way European high culture was conducted and spread due to the rapid rise of railroad, telegram and printing technologies in the 19th century, anchored by a famous opera singer who seemed to know everybody and everything in the worlds of music, poetry, politics and more.

Having a hard time getting through this. The main character's naivete about other cultures (in spite of being an immigration lawyer!) is rather unbelievable. She is willing to put others (mostly men) at risk to achieve retribution for the crimes against her clients.

Also, the book really needs a good editor. The strained metaphors and similes detract from simple storytelling and make this a hard read.

Really getting bogged down in the middle of this. It's getting repetitive. Wise up, girl. These brothers are no good. RUN!

Not to be read straight through, this is a great way to dip into some of the best portraits of Ireland as told by great writers, travellers and memoirists through the centuries.

An incredible true story of a man who lived through some of the most horrific chapters of 20th century history, and produced a novel that is supposed to be the definitive portrait of life in Baku in the last years before World War I. Also the author of devastating portraits of Lenin and Stalin.

Loving this book -- I was actually fortunate enough to visit Eric and Jonathan's home back in 2010 and it's wonderful to read the story about how it came to be.
