chapter 4 update: the typical cst calls for human-centered decision-making (and he did not mince words naming the issues), a couple of humble admissions of the Church’s mistakes, and one paragraph about economics that I did not understand oops

Ch. 3 update: I finally understand the title. This reminder that real human progress/magnificence is found in our capacity for union with the Divine makes all our efforts for technological progress feel much less magnificent in comparison

chapter 2 update/summary: peace studies and social encyclicals are for everyone

update I just finished chapter 1 and was thrilled to discover that he already addressed all of my pre-reading thoughts! also i cannot believe the concision with which he just summarized the entire CST corpus. whoa

no one will be surprised by my thoughts before reading this. i expect it to be fab in the sense that it builds upon prior centuries of catholic social teaching in order to address a specific issue. in this sense, i think it’s important to emphasize that this encyclical is primarily about human dignity! it’s about AI only in light of this. I just fear that it will be received in a way that misconstrues this idea

Finished book 2. The same. I like the stories. Frame story still unnecessary. Confused how the priest in the frame story was married. Wait I guess they’re Anglican in the frame story because it’s England and multiple centuries later? Anyway just posting this update feel like I accomplished something because the physical copy contains a trilogy so I can’t mark it done until after book 3.

Finished book 1. It’s from a parishioner so I will keep reading and I feel unfair roasting it. Frame story is CRINGE because it’s unnecessary and solely functions to make poor transitions and commentary for the actual content. A good book guides the reader to do that on her own imo. The content itself is giving Aesop’s Fables monastery edition. It definitely has some beautiful spiritual nuggets though.

didn’t read every word bc i don’t need to know that much science. casey says i have a lower risk of death bc of my daily step count so catch me being immortal. she is probably right about the problems endemic in our medical system and food industry all being linked to money and affecting everyone. oh well whatcha gonna do. eat unprocessed foods i guess? not likely
