no one will be surprised by my thoughts before reading this. i expect it to be fab in the sense that it builds upon prior centuries of catholic social teaching in order to address a specific issue. in this sense, i think it’s important to emphasize that this encyclical is primarily about human dignity! it’s about AI only in light of this. I just fear that it will be received in a way that misconstrues this idea

Ch. 3 update: I finally understand the title. This reminder that real human progress/magnificence is found in our capacity for union with the Divine makes all our efforts for technological progress feel much less magnificent in comparison

update I just finished chapter 1 and was thrilled to discover that he already addressed all of my pre-reading thoughts! also i cannot believe the concision with which he just summarized the entire CST corpus. whoa

You would be the one to say this isn't about ai

I just foresee people saying “this is Pope Leo’s encyclical about AI” and missing the point that this based on the teachings the Church has had all along (with some developments) and he is just applying them! and the danger of this is isolating the encyclical to just one issue which limits its effects. whereas we should instead allow its principles to form how we think about everything (as catholic social teaching does through the lens of human dignity)
this applies similarly to the issue of people complaining that the pope didn’t say enough about ai or make the judgement claims they wanted him to. same deal: it’s primarily about human dignity, or, as the subtitle suggests, “safeguarding the human person”
