I relate:

"Nesi had made her appeal, spilling her heart to a deity she knew for a fact she should not trust and had to try anyway, in that little, homey cabin in the Woods where the Fox had made a den for themself.

And after having done so, she'd been met with an utter silence and stillness reminiscent of the moment before the hunter's pounce, the flash of teeth."

Now I'm just reading a bunch of stuff concurrently and leaning into my ADD. But this writing style does require deliberate attention and absorption, which is a nice muscle to use.

So far the writing is good. A nice palate cleanser from another one I'm reading

Tbh not enjoying it. It's dialogue-forward right now, and not very believable or natural, and feels amateurish. But I'm gonna stick with it hoping to change my mind. I did get to hear an interesting perspective, maybe 2; and I own Atavistas, but I haven't read it yet-- this is my first Lydia Millet. Holding out for high scores!

She Got Herself a Universe is some of the best writing I've heard. Tears streaming my face while driving. People giving low stars cannot possibly have been reached appropriately by that essay, there's no way. It's so good that the rest of the book could somehow fall flat and I'd still give it five stars.

Didn't expect to have tears streaming quietly down my face while driving, but the essay She Got Herself a Universe is some of the best writing I've heard. He gave his all for that read. Gotta take a minute at the gas station to collect myself.

Memoirs and essays are the hidden gems of reading slumps -- when you're lucky enough to find the audio versions read by the author, able to stand against your past (and recent) coveted listens, and add to the (likely) short list of ones you've enjoyed. I scoured Libby for this very intention and downloaded about 9 memoirs; this familiar author that I waited till last to try was the winner. The others, absolutely not.

Got to a stopping point at 11:34 pm.... old folks like myself know that's "hell" upside down (from back in the pager days of my youth). Just ironic cos of Rainn's spiritual underpinnings. I would like to think he'd find a degree of humor in that, though, even though it's barely noteworthy at all.

You think you can knock out an audiobook in a day... I try to find these best pocket moments and am always amazed I don't have a full 8 hours or so I can devote uninterrupted to a book. But I'm creeping right along the best I can.
