sylvia plath‘s prose is really beautiful 😩 so far there has been some racist language and of course one should critically regard this, but it definitely makes her work any worse. i love how she rejects patriarchal gender roles, i‘m very excited how this is gonna turn out. also the thing between esther and constantine ;)

I have no idea what is going on. It’s interesting though how Vesta, having been belittled with Walter‘s epistemic violence their whole relationship, takes control of her life and her agency. Excited how it’s gonna end

I have no idea where this is gonna go because this novel is so introspective, Vesta only imagining how Magda‘s personality, background, struggles and life could be like in 30 pages. It’s interesting how Magda is a projection of Vesta herself, but at the same time also some daughter figure Vesta seeks to protect. The immigrant experiences for both Vesta and Magda are interesting, let’s see how this goes

In my mind, Walter is played by Werner Herzog

Liked it so far, a bit slow and mundane, but I am not uninterested. It‘s not the witty and disgusting Moshfegh you know from MYORAR, Eileen or Lapvona, but you can still identify her. Strange bodies, a lonely soul, grief and death are still super present here.

I loved „The Surrogate“. As uncomfortable and hilarious as all the other stories. I thought this one broaded on themes of co-dependency. A woman with a vaginal swelling has no idea show see his, there are demons inside of her and loves to perform. The part with Charlie Chaplin and Hitler was the funniest. It all reminded me of lot of Yorgos Lanthimos‘ movie „Kinds of Kindness“.

Okay, I think „Dancing in the Moonlight“ is my new favorite now. I loved the hopeless obsession, how Nick looses himself after a profane interaction. OM‘s characters are depraved as desperate, they yearn for connection and think that there is something meaningful out there for them, too, that can save them from their demises. „It was an act of God.“: what a thought-provoking ending.

I loved „Nothing Ever Happens Here“ so much. It was really funny with interesting characters. A strange friendship develops between an aspiring, but untalented, actor and his landlady, an eccentric writer. I love how Moshfegh‘s protagonists always yearn for something larger than them, but are confronted with the reality and consequences of their decisions and actions. Dreams remain dreams, disillusionment.

I really loved „The Beach Boy“. It‘s my favorite short story so far and reminded me of The White Lotus. A really strange and sad story about grief, vengeance and transience. Like all the characters in this collection, the protagonist is lonely, depressed and disillusioned. They all have a very harsh and unromanticized look at life, they’re unsympathetic, but never illusion themselves, even when they lie.
