DNF at 42%. I found it boring, confusing, overwrought, and so heavily symbolic that it loses the story. The prose feels quite purple and very much a product of the Weimar era. Interesting historically, but ultimately unenjoyable to read. I vaguely remember bits of the film, so perhaps I should revisit that instead.
