Lots of trauma as the story unfolds in the early 1940's and the Glass House is abandoned and the occupants emigrate to Switzerland.

The book about a real house from the 1930's but the characters are fictitious. The author is a scientist so the language is strained and feels like it was written in the '30's or '40's.

Ackerman's writing is a bit dry, which surprises me considering the tremendous story she's telling about real people and the bombing of Warsaw.

Based on a real zoo in Warsaw as Germany roared in to split it with Russia. Wonderful descriptions of the animals and the loving caretakers.

From present time back into history of a painting. Beautiful short stories all strung together like visual art.

I'm glad I kept reading. The tone and plot shifted once the war was over and the spy stopped fantasizing so much. She became more interesting along with the characters around her in the BBC broadcasting house where she worked.

An 18 yr old as a spy? Much of the language and fantasy is definitely that of an 18 yr old in 1940, but it's a stretch to see why she was recruited. Lots of sarcastic humor and skimming over the costs of being a British spy. But I'll carry on and finish it.

Riveting story set 400 years apart; Read like a mystery, which it is, that uncovers who was the scribe?

Terrific book of a young, inexperienced Polish doctor in the wilds of Hungary as WWI rages through the Eastern Europe. He learns on the job during the harsh winters and mild springs.
