Essentially this book says: prioritize slowing down, genuine connections with friends and community, and care for the person more than their ballot.
Overall, I agree with this message - however - I find this slightly limiting when someone might be nice and lovely, but overall do not believe in the values of someone’s identity, there’s problems, that someone who is white heterosexual relationship might not see.

This start is S L O W it hasn’t picked up yet. If it wasn’t so highly rated I would have stopped by now

A bit odd that the big battle starts at 90%. Everything must go their way at this point, with only 10% left

Currently living in Mexico, so the chapters on US-Mex interactions are particularly fascinating (currently chapters 1&7)

LOVE THIS IDEA: mind map. write the current year in the center with spokes for different life areas - such as career, creative projects, money, social, health, learning, hobbies, relationships - then brainstorm a handful of desired outcomes across each area

Wow! So this story is slow from 25-60ish percent. SO SLOW. But after 60ish%? Takes off like a rocket!!!

To identify your purpose (aka what makes you fulfilled whenever you’ve done progress):
1) why do I do the work I do?
2) why is that important?
3) why do I care about THAT?
4) and why THAT?
5) and why THAT? Ultimately, what is my why? This purpose only has to matter to YOU.

There is a simple yet powerful idea that you can make any activity that you don’t naturally enjoy more attempting, just by bundling it with an activity you find tempting. For example, an undesirable activity like commuting with listening to an audiobook or calling a friend.

Time poverty is the prevalent feeling of having too much to do and too little time to do it. Focusing on time (not money) increases happiness bc it motivates you to spend more deliberately (in more fulfilling ways). DAMN

….why the feet obsession?

The pattern continues. Beginning of chapter they find some new all-important thing they need, middle of chapter they plan how to get it, end of chapter they get it. Rinse-repeat. It’s getting long. Love the story, but getting longggg

Chapter 4 is great

This book is told with the philosophy that poor people are often exploited by rich ones, and history is always told by the victor. This is a telling of the other side, fascinating take

How women are treated is reeeeeeeeeally problematic. It’s not even the main topic, always a side topic, but not good….

70% in and it’s not gotten any better. The women stuff is just weird, and now the religion stuff is getting weird. I don’t get the hype?

I loved how this book started, was super into the story! but we have now divulged into questionable commentary about women, religion, etc. was really into it, now less so…
