“Did they only keep me in ignorance so they could pretend they weren't entirely powerless? … They whispered and tittered and were lewd. I would never make love, they would never make love again: perhaps that made us equal and they were trying to console themselves by depriving me of the only thing they could.”

So far it’s been a lot of examples of how some women became a mother though they physically did not give birth. When I picked up this book, I was more interested in the narrative centered around the women’s life without children, not with children. I feel a bit disappointed but I’ll continue on.

I'm the protagonist of this book. I'm not but I am.

"In the end, it was endless meetings, corporate pressure, profit goals. It was nowhere near as exotic as it seemed at the dinner table. When you're young, every part of life seems big and monumental. Once older, you can see it for what it is: smaller pieces of a larger game you have no choice but to play"

J and I have been listening to an audiobook version of this book since 2024 and we've made so little progress. Mainly because it's hard listening to innocent people being displaced and murdered by greedy settlers/colonizers.

I personally am enjoying this more than her previous book. Probably because I’m unfamiliar with the Russian ballet world whereas I had been exposed to works that are set in Korea under Japanese rule.
