“Keep a candle,” I said, “in the window”

“[…] suggests the extent to which the narrative on which many of us grew up no longer applies.”

“Of course that was the image I had seen always, seen it without quite realizing what I saw, a dynamo finally free of man, splendid at last in its absolute isolation, transmitting power and releasing water to a world where no one is.”

“It seemed to me later that I had never before seen and would perhaps never again see the residuum of European custom so movingly and pointlessly observed.”

“I have seldom seen a house so evocative of the unspeakable.”

I found this essay particularly quippy and likeable :p

“There in the Governor’s Mansion that night I learned for the first time that my face to the world was not necessarily the face in my mirror.”

this feels like reading a 60s RF Kuang bc i fear i’m too 60-70s uncultured to understand half these essays

I lived […] “in a world of people moved by strange, conflicted, poorly comprehended and, above all, devious motivations”

we r so back: i’m so determined to finish this book
