This is a story that puts organized religion on notice and in a theatric and campy way pulls back the curtain of the solipsism involved in declaring 1 religion as the true religion. All other faith systems, all people who have not had the opportunity to hear the message, well, they are destined for hell, and perhaps hell isn’t all we made it to be. This is a quick read that had me reading passages to my husband!

What a wild ending! Also, Draven’s new spicy ‘lightning’ move. Ummmmm.THAT was interesting!

This is a beautiful story which is heart breaking and is based on the authors relative which makes it all the more compelling. My daughter listened to part of it with me and found it to be too distressing (the portions related to slavery’s horrific treatment of slaves) but was learning from it and enjoying it until then. Wow. What a tremendous talent in Erin Crosby.

Junie has found her relationship with The Taylor’s valet (male slave) Caleb to make her feel seen and has found this friendship to be one that she would miss when he leaves. Minnie is in the ‘in between’ where so many slaves remain until they can finish their ‘missions’ finds out some hard truths about their origins.

Reminiscent of the reformatory when it comes to the supernatural aspects bringing attention to old ills.

I’m able to focus better this time. You need to be in the mood for historic fiction with societal implications. I typically veer away from stories including slavery and the abuses black people suffered because of secondary trauma. I feel better able to hear these stories now because my children are of an age where these histories need to be told so they don’t forget and can remember to tell their children.
