I'm seeing why people have mixed feelings on book 3. They said it really depends on whether you like Dalinar or not. I do. I want more Dalinar and less monster-of-the-week, side-quest plot derailment that is Kaladin and Shallan's POVs. I also understand it's necessary for character development, but Kaladin's "must save everyone" crisis and Shallan's magical D.I.D. are leaving an off taste. Not bad, just...off

Damn. Well, a lot of plot threads just resolved very abruptly, and there are over 300 pages left...

I also appreciate how this book got to Blood Meridian-level content, but McMurtry writes and describes it in such a way that shields the reader quite well.

First death on the trail, and it wasn't pretty :(

Took a while to reconnect with Sanderson's writing style and the characters, but this book is wonderful. The bigger threads hinted at are starting to pull together, and it is a blast seeing it all unfold alongside these characters. I finally enjoy Shallan's POV scenes (yay). Just got to the ARENA SCENE RAAAHH
Also everyone blushes way too much, and Sanderson uses "said" too many times. These grate on me.

Too much talk of carrots

So we went from Dune, to Star Wars: A New Hope, to the intro of Aladdin, to now Gladiator?? It's fun but very meandering. Still feels like I'm waiting for the plot to kick in, which isn't good this far into a book. I am enjoying watching Hadrian become more rounded out, and the things from the beginning become relevant again, but I still want more from this.

I'm enjoying it more now, but Hadrian is a very passive MC with weak/non-existent goals, and that almost turned this into a DNF.

Also, this is just Dune if Paul had grown up in House Harkonnen.

It's fun. It's familiar. I can't believe it's not Dune.

This book should have been a trilogy :/

Also this plot feels like a bunch of side quests in a trench coat and the buttons holding it together are character development.

This is Abercrombie's signature style and character work, and the vibes are League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets 2004 Van Helsing. Loving it so far! Kinda wish the setting wasn't just a historical fantasy version of our world, but maybe that's just me having trouble adjusting after being immersed in the First Law world for so long.
