the red theater chapter talking about a rural troupe performing revolutionary operas in their community brought real tears to my eyes and made me want to throw up. i also wanted to say something about how funny mao is but i think that i was putting my own modern ironic lens over him and i wasnt fully willing to grapple with his total straightforward sincerity and that is on me actually
