"I recognized what Deonna was saying, [...] the internal back-and-forth on how tough or not we’ve got it. A day can feel hard and not-hard; a challenge can seem giant, and then maybe conquerable, and then two hours later, it’s overwhelming all over again. It depends not just on your circumstances but also on your mood, your attitude, your stance—all of which can change in an instant."

Data visualization = storytelling. You choose what stories you wanna tell and you tell it in the form of graphic. The same data set can tell two different stories depending on how you “visualize” it (e.g. the dramatic Iraq’s bloody toll)

One common with data visualization though is that it is often more beautiful than informative.

And Florence Nightingale is THE queen of data visualization.

1. cognitive reflection
2. example about infant mortality rate: when looking at stats, be sure define what is being measured and then break out the math.
3. “the death of one man is a tragic story; the death of millions is just a statistic.”

this is the second book i've read that talks about how you, as a grownup, can suffer due to some unintentionally fucked up parenting back when you were a toddler. seriously. a toddler. and i just can't wrap my mind around that that piece of info.

More Hmong people staying together in one place made it even harder for assimilation and thus, employment. Without a job or English proficiency, the elders lost their traditional power status in the family to their children who could speak English & understand American customs.

Lost roles and identities contributed to the prevalence of mental health problems among Hmong people, especially the elders.

reading this with a heavy heart. It’s that feeling of helplessness when you know what it is going to happen but all you can do is watch. The fact that this is a true story is just…sad. It is even sadder that this happened 40 years ago but the same problems still hold true today.

This book was published in 1953 but it's still relevant today. Taught me a thing or two about the role of cultural relativism in healthcare.

"I felt they really cared for Lia, and they were doing the best, the absolute best they knew how as parents, to take care of the kid. [...] I don’t remember having a feeling of anger, but I remember having a little bit of a feeling of awe at how differently we looked at the world. It was very foreign to me that they had the ability to stand firm in the face of expert opinion. "

since H'mong patients and doctors cannot communicate due to language barriers, the doctors treat their jobs as practicing veterinary medicine :(

1. naming your emotions helps. build your emotional vocab.

2. prepare a self-soothing box with customized instructions on what to do when you feel down. you’ll need it when you’re feeling down and unable to think => This time last year I made something similar for myself before without learning about its benefits . Can’t help but feeling proud of how smart I am :p Or how strong my survival insticts are lol

emotions are not facts, but a result of the brain trying to make sense of whatever is going on in your life and more importantly, your body. in order to do so, the brain uses memories of what happened in the past that was associated with that physical sensation => pounding heart due to coffee can easily be mistaken for a panic attack

it’s crucial to develop the ability to act in line with your best interests when motivation is absent. This means doing what you need to do even when you don’t feel like doing it.

anhedonia is different from procrastination. anhedonia is also avoiding doing things that are important or meaningful to you, but because you think that the task is meaningless and not worth the effort.

solution: reconnect w/ your goals.

when you’re in low mood, it’s hard to make decisions. Try not to focus on the outcome of the decision then. Instead, think of decisions as something that helps you move in the direction. Small decisions count too.

keep a worry list beside your bed. If a worry pops up, write it down. Your worry list will become your to-do list for the next day.
