Back on board the short stories and they’re already so great.

This is hands down one of the best short stories I have ever read. The story is so rich in character detail and history and the slow, satisfying unfolding narrative is entrancing to behold.

I watched the movie they made out of this short story at the Sydney film festival the first semester university was back in person after Covid. The story really left an impression on me so I’m getting around to reading its source material.

Sometimes the randomness and incoherence can be a little frustrating but most of the time I feel like Denis Johnson is accesses a meaning in absurdity and discontinuity that is beyond expression. This is proving to be a very interesting book. I am finding its later chapters to be a little more uneven than it’s beginning.

This book gets a little bit better every time I read it. What a wonderful feeling.

Okay, the initially disjointed structure has really hit it stride for me now. The fragmented narrative not only simulates the stories depiction of addiction, violence and postmodern ideas around the collapse of objectivity but also allows the story to range very widely with its characters and ideas. So far I’m loving its exploration of how someone can be violent and kind at once’s. It’s a humanistic portrayal.

Great use of easy language and big ideas so far.

I read this story many times when I was a kid. I am revesting it to teaching a year 9 English class. I'm so keen!!!
