This book is kind of gone off the rails and I’m really struggling with it. It’s tough because it’s still really well written at points but I’m just not with the story and characters.

The book has some really potent ideas to spread about the strange circular relationship between technological entertainment, particularly documentary film, and the person creating and consuming it. The story touches on the self creating and perpetuating system of entertainment: how media is both a reflection of reality and helps inform new types of reality and gives us a vernacular to explore it. Very interesting.

This book really is best when taken on its own terms and when read slowly with the ability to enjoy its many meanings and multifaceted interpretation. I find a lot of my reading is just a constant battle to enjoy the thing I’m experiencing instead of anticipating the next thing.

This book sense of location and atmosphere is honestly amazing. The heart of darkness vibes are so strong.

You’ve gotta love having a bit of a break from a book and returning full of vigour and focus to renew your reading.
