Tom Joad and his family are reunited and Pastor Casy is hanging around. The characters in this book have no direction and are trying to survive. They’re wanderers. The narrative hasn’t really begun yet, I’m guessing the Joads will go west. Tom Joad gets out of jail for manslaughter which was a plot device to give a “time travel” like a coma would to contrast Oklahoma of the past to now.

Isaacson gives a detailed, dense account of Kissinger’s actions from birth until (at this point) his relationships with Rockefeller and Nixon. So far his personality (insecure, power hungry, resentful of his father’s pacifism) are all clear from others’ accounts of him. So are his skills for preparedness and clear thinking.
