This is not a quick read, but it is SO valuable. I am learning so much about the cultures, social structures, and histories of the African continent.

I only have this on audiobook, and it takes me forever to get through audiobooks. This book would be good for fans of Percy Jackson. Middle school boys adventure and all that. I don't think I'm the target audience. It's very creative though, and so far its better than other afrofantasy books I've explored for this age.

Some interesting stories here. They are all from Botswana or Zimbabwe. Not a difficult read, and mildly entertaining. I like K.P. Kojo's "Tales from Africa" better, though.

Mama didn't let me read this when I was a teenager. I think that was wise. Even now there are a few scenes I've skimmed over. It is a well written book though, full of rich characters and rich imagery.

Having trouble getting invested in this one...

A bit ridiculous, but creative and fun. Kind of like a Ghanaian version of Percy Jackson.

This is really good so far. I can't believe I haven't read this classic before.

Hmmm ... We shall see if I finish this one. A depressing read even though it's told in a casual tone. Well written for sure, but the harsh realities of her childhood are told in unflinching honesty - alcoholic mother, neglect, death of a sibling, violent conflict nearby, witnessing the sexual assault of her sister, underage drinking and smoking, racism... Lots of language too.

Beautiful hardcover book, bright illustrations. Looks like a great first introduction for elementary and middle school students to the breadth and diversity of African history and culture.

Listening to the audiobook helped me fall asleep... There are some interesting parts but overall this book is quite boring.

I thought this book was about a missionary doctor in Africa. The first half of this book dragged on for WAY too long. Africa was first mentioned at 30%. He didn't actually get there till 45%. I'm hoping the second half is more interesting.

It took me about thirty percent to be interested in the story. I'm not enthralled but I'm not hating it either. This author writes such creative stories, but to me they usually don't feel well written (plot structure, prose, character voice). Often I can't make it past the sample. This one is better than the others so far.

At the start I wasn't too sure but at 45 percent I'm enjoying all the twists and turns and curious to see how the story will pan out. This is a unique book! The "headstrong girl who challenges cultural norms" is a trope I'm tired of, but Olawu is a complex enough character and the setting unique enough that I'm currently happy to put up with it.

Stopped at 40 percent. It's a drag to get through. Nothing happened for the first third, there wasn't really any promise of a character arc, there were too many names to keep track of, and the voice did not feel authentic. The whole book feels like it's from the adoptive mother's point of view even when it's supposed to be from the daughter's perspective. Has potential but needed editing.

This is hard to get through... Not a huge fan so far
