Complete thoughts coming later but my progress should tell you everything you need to know about my opinion of David Copperfield. Might be my single favorite use of first person I’ve ever read. It’s so immersive and rich.

It took me about 500 pages to see exactly what Dickens was doing with this novel and now I can’t stop reading it. Bleak House is a page turner once you get into it. Dickens social satire and commentary is so relevant even today but he really understood the human condition and this masterpiece certainly shows it.

Dickens is a genius. There’s lots of build up with this novel but I’m getting to see the payoffs and they are indeed brilliant.

I genuinely cannot put this book down. This masterclass in maximalist writing proves exactly why I think Dickens to be the greatest prose novelist the English language has ever seen and I’m so glad to be back into his work after a long hiatus.

I probably shouldn’t be taking writing tips from a 19th century author but Balzac’s prose is simply some of the best I’ve ever read.
