Damn, it’s so sad that Charlie not only realizing his friends all made fun of him but also getting expelled from the group only because he’s become smart.

Daisy wants to be understood, and she feels being seen by Billy the way she wants to be seen. There’s still 40% till the end, but god are they only gonna remain soulmates in music?

It’s sad and unfair that the husband at fault still got to maintain his friends and social circle because he still has money and power. Unmarried women should all read this book. Financial is important, and you should never 100% expose yourself to anyone incl your partner because people change and love vanishes.

Oh my. Again shocked. This woman was overly naive. How come a family like this able to raise a child this naive?

Hard to believe that she was a lawyer when she waived her rights for prenup and property ownership.

I probably would never have read the book if it weren’t for 1) having nothing to listen to on Friday evening while taping the room, and 2) it happening to be a “skip-the-line” loan from Libby. Her husband seemed really cruel and just totally abandoned not only his marriage but also his children. Belle also sounded awfully naive given her wealthy family, or maybe she was just too well protected.

The plot moves so slow. I kind of understand why Patchett and Strout are close friends and literary peers.

I’m a bit scared to read more into the story. Eddie so far seems such a good guy. Was there a big misunderstanding that totally changed their lives?

Ugh. Really sick of this book so far. A maid who was in prison for ten years behaves like a naive teenage girl. I’m sick of her narcissistic monologues of how much she loves Andrew, how happy she was to kick Nina out and her entitlement… Andrew is absolutely a psychopath. What can he get out of torturing his wife? His absolute dominant power over her? Does he like her at all?

My speculation:
1. Andrew killed the original Nina
2. Nina killed the original Nina
3. Nina and Andrew are series maid killers and this was how all previous maids died or killed. Enzo might have seen some evidence.

If you think too much about the ass-kicking that life gave you, you’ll stop pushing the boundaries and breaking the rules. It’s better to take it, spend some time crying, then wake up the next day and move on.

British racism vs Afrikaner racism: At least the former gave the natives something to aspire to (mission schools that offer English, literature, medicine and law), comparing to Bantu schools that does metrics and agriculture. “Why give a book to a monkey?”

Rich countries have better chances of recovery may be due to far more abundant food for nutrition, much quicker access to medical support, medical supplies.

In America you had the forced removal of the native into reservations coupled with slavery followed by segregation. Apartheid: all 3 happening to the same group of people at the same time.
