A man spends multiple years meditating and divorced from society, begging and living off the charity of others. Achieves intense peace. And two or three sentences into his first conversation with a woman he threatens to rape her. I cannot begin to express my exhaustion.

I fear this protagonist is disinterstingly shallow and boring.

God I fucking hate this book and I hate Victor Hugo and his smug condescending sexist ass shallow bullshit. I usually love old dead white dudes like Dickens and Twain but I cannot STAND how smugly Hugo tells the reader how smart and cool he is for thinking women are weak and dumb and prison magically transforms you into a bad person. Ugh is insufficient
