She places the letter in her wardrobe and feels emotional relief. She goes to bed and hears paper rustling in her closet and then a paper comes out of it. She picks it up and instantly can tell that whoever wrote her this letter is not her brother Forest.

Her mom sold the radio to get money for alcohol. Iris being emotional and angry because she used music and the radio to cope with her days, but also made her feel close to her grandma, goes in her room and writes Forest. He hasn’t written to her in the five months she’s been gone, and from seeing the other paper, to her alcoholic mother, she couldn’t take it. She sends out the letter.

Iris invited Roman for a sandwich, and since he said no she ran by the store before going home. The store barely had food supplies because the clerk is sending food to troops fighting for the gods. The store clerk ends up giving her a paper and it turns out to be her papers rival. The image she saw was not a god or goddess but a monster. She returns home and finds out her mother sold her grandmothers radio.

Iris Winnow’s brother Forest leaves to fight at the front lines fighting for the goddess Enva. She’s supposed to stay in school until he comes back. She’s dropped out of school and began to write The Gazette and meets Roman Kitt, a boy who annoys her greatly. Her boss tells her that she has a shot at writing a huge piece that he originally meant for Roman to write, but she’s struggling with her brother.

Layla tells Elise she has to leave and then sits outside with Valeryia’s body. The other clan want to give her a proper burial but Layla isn’t ready to say goodbye just yet. A woman walks up to her and suggests that Layla trust her because she knew Vex. She knows Valeryia’s real name as well. When Layla looks at the woman, she looks like a very old reaper.

Elise shows up to the lair to try to get her sister back. Valeryia tells her to choose between Layla and her sister. She breaks a glass and her hand starts bleeding everywhere. Valeryia puts her finger in Elise’s blood on the table and licks her fingers. Elise’s blood is poison to her now because of the cure mixing with Layla’s venom. Valeryia turns into human form, and ends up falling from a window.

The Cotton Club is abandoned but Layla goes to meet Jamie there. She tells him she wants the rest of the alcohol Stephen Wayne provided. But Jamie sold it to a woman named Rome. Layla realizes this could be detrimental and start another war, so Jamie comes up with the idea to make an alliance between gangsters and reapers.

The week following the massacre was hard for Elise and her family. Everyone’s moved out of the estate so it is now just her and her mother. Layla and Elise discover that the media has gotten a hold of Stephen Wayne and his story. And society is eating it up as well as the mayoral candidates have promises about reapers. Elise suggests moving to France for the cure, and even suggests working with other countries.

Despite Valeryia’s harsh words, Layla tells her if she needs her she’s always going to be there for her. And didn’t give her the chance to provide a response.

Elise tells her mom that Josi is gone and her mom realizes that her father has lied to them both. Her mother apologizes for how she has treated Elise and how she has felt. Layla goes to her lair and to her surprise Valeryia is there. She tells Layla she’s ruined everything, but all Layla wants to know is where Josi is. Valeryia pulls out Josi’s ribbon, and tries to ruin her relationship with Layla.

Rogue reapers help Layla get away from the bloody scene. She’s also craving blood so she goes into reaper territory to hunt then waits for Elise. She climbs into Elise’s room when she sees she’s there, and they both go over their feelings and what the absence of five years has also affected them. Elise has to tell her mother that Josi is gone, she hasn’t been found since everything happened.

Layla tries to give Elise her blood and chest compressions and it takes her a minute to come to. She finally comes to after a while and Layla cries into her.

She tells the Rogue reapers that Elise isn’t to be touched then goes to find Tobias and Stephen. Mr. Wayne attempts to kill Layla but Tobias trips him so the shot is inaccurate. Layla grabs Mr. Saint and tells him he owes Elise an apology. He laughs at her and Sterling commands Layla to let him go. Layla lunges at him but Elise gets in front of her and takes the bullet. Layla tries to give Elise her blood.

The poison turned Layla into the monster Sterling was. She kills Dr. Harding, and all she wants is to kill everyone else in her wake. There was so much blood around that she knew other reapers wouldn’t be able to resist. Rogue reapers showed up, and during this she ends up turning back to her reaper form slowly. Elise catches her and Layla realizes Elise might’ve gotten help.

Valeryia walks in with Josi, because Josi never left. Mr. Saint tells Elise that she’s been with Valeryia, and Valeryia has been giving her venom to Josi and Tobias too. Mr. Saint tells Elise she has one more chance to prove her loyalty to her family. She gives up Layla who gets taken away by cuffs and Saint guards. Elise gets into the car with Valeryia. Valeryia tells her that she came up with everything.

Elise goes back to her father’s study and he informs her that he is no longer his heir and Sterling now has the position. Layla comes in holding Dr. Harding at gunpoint and Sterling points his gun at her and demands to let him go. Layla makes Dr. Harding explain everything to Mr. Saint about Stephen Wayne. Elise notices that there’s an extra wine glass on the desk and ask who’s it is.

Elise goes to her father and says Layla’s venom was controlling her. Her father tells her to go shower and Sterling gives her the cure. Layla pops up in the Saint estate and bites / drinks from Elise so the story is more believable.

Layla drops Elise off at Jamie’s apartment and goes to look for Dr. Harding. When she gets to his lab, he shoots at her thinking she is Mr. Wayne, but all Layla wants is information. Dr. Harding informs Layla that the cure has caused an insane urge to kill, hence why Sterling turned into the monster he did. Dr. Harding reveals that Mr. Wayne is using the reaper venom market to make profit and he wants to stop him.

There is chaos and Layla ends up tackling Elise out of the way before she can notice what is happening. During this, Layla gets injected and turns into what Sterling turned into. Before she completely turns, Layla tells Elise to run and not look back.

Mr. Saint let Josi bond with Valeryia. Josi is bonded with Valeryia and she isn’t acting like herself. Elise gives up on the plan and Layla gets taken into custody. Valeryia is doing this to get rid of the Saint empire and the reapers at the same time. She has been slipping her blood to Mr. Saint to accomplish that. When they reach their destination, Mr. Wayne wants to use the cure.

Layla bites Elise to show that the venom is in her. Elise goes to her home and convinces her father that Layla’s venom had control over her. Her father believes her. Sterling gives her the cure and Layla sneakily enters the Saint home. Elise goes to her father’s study, and they’re interrupted by Layla holding Dr. Harding at gun point. During the interaction they notice more people are there. Valeryia and Josi.

Layla drops Elise off at Jamie’s apartment then goes to Dr. Hardings lab. He shoots at them mistakingly thinking Mr. Wayne was going to kill him. But Layla tells him they just want information about the cure. Dr. Harding tells them that the cure creates the urge to kill. They all come up with a plan to stop Mr. Wayne.

Elise is supposed to inject Layla like she promised her father. She sticks the needle in her neck, but pulls it out and injects Sterling with the poison. Sterling turns into a monster, tearing through the other reapers at the summit. Since Sterlings blood got into some of the other reapers, they also turned like Sterling. Elise and Layla hide amongst the chaos. Sterling is instructed to find them both.

During their argument, Mr. Saint denounces Elise as his heir, and replaces her with Sterling. He also physically rips Layla away from her which causes an entire new avenue of anger she had never felt before towards her father.

Layla comes to in a pool of Mei’s blood. Mei is laying lifeless next to her. She curls up into a ball and begins to freak out when Mr. Wayne and Mr. Saint come in. They offer her help with the cure and she accepts it. They then present Layla to Elise, who can’t control any part of her that has feelings for Layla. She reaches out for her and her father is livid. Him and Elise get into an argument.

Mei gets the cure injected into her throat. Mr. Saint and Mr. Wayne get called to a meeting while the cure works. At first, Mei convulses before shooting upright and excitedly exclaiming she thinks it worked. Layla is jealous and frustrated because that should have been her. Mei’s nose starts to bleed, and Layla goes to wipe it. The scent and feeling of fresh human blood makes Layla pass out.

Mr. Wayne and Elise arrive to give Layla the cure and start the summit. Mr. Wayne explains he wants repeats and humans to live in peace and uses Elise and Layla as an example. He brings out the cure and calls for Layla, but Elise says she isn’t going to let Layla take it. Mei volunteers, and Layla doesn’t want her to take it. Mei goes anyway and Layla stays by her side. Elise is instructed to wait outside.

Layla runs to the place where her parents died and she turned as well; Central Park. She lets out all of her emotions, trauma, and everything she’s held in since that point in time.

Layla asks for the real reason Elise is there, and she tells her that Mr. Wayne is coming to the lair to offer a cure. They get into a huge argument that ends up with Elise admitting for having feelings for Layla. Layla, overwhelmed by her own emotions as well as Elise’s, runs off.
