Iris Winnow’s brother Forest leaves to fight at the front lines fighting for the goddess Enva. She’s supposed to stay in school until he comes back. She’s dropped out of school and began to write The Gazette and meets Roman Kitt, a boy who annoys her greatly. Her boss tells her that she has a shot at writing a huge piece that he originally meant for Roman to write, but she’s struggling with her brother.

She places the letter in her wardrobe and feels emotional relief. She goes to bed and hears paper rustling in her closet and then a paper comes out of it. She picks it up and instantly can tell that whoever wrote her this letter is not her brother Forest.

Her mom sold the radio to get money for alcohol. Iris being emotional and angry because she used music and the radio to cope with her days, but also made her feel close to her grandma, goes in her room and writes Forest. He hasn’t written to her in the five months she’s been gone, and from seeing the other paper, to her alcoholic mother, she couldn’t take it. She sends out the letter.

Iris invited Roman for a sandwich, and since he said no she ran by the store before going home. The store barely had food supplies because the clerk is sending food to troops fighting for the gods. The store clerk ends up giving her a paper and it turns out to be her papers rival. The image she saw was not a god or goddess but a monster. She returns home and finds out her mother sold her grandmothers radio.
