Sometimes military fantasies take me a bit to get into. However, my most favorite books are all some variation of military/political fantasy. I’m curious how this will go, though I do wish I had a pronunciation guide!

Not a fan of the FMC and I don’t find Carmilla a believable character for the time period. It is technically well written and the plot moves along. I so desperately want to like this more than I currently do.

1) why does Lenore have the constitution of a wet piece of toilet paper?
2) oh no her toughest obstacle is renovating a manor with limitless money and help in two weeks before the great grouse shoot.

I’m gonna keep reading but good lord 🙄🙄🙄

Good god Quentin is beyond insufferable. I’m not sure if he was written that way on purpose or not. Also, a lot of the book is millennial generation coded, which adds a weird sort of outdated and cringy aftertaste.

Some of the author’s voice sounds really pretentious. I’m talking outside of Q’s POV. And my GOD is Q annoying and awful.

It’s good, but not great. I am enjoying myself and that’s what’s important

I’m finally reading this earnestly now. No idea why I’ve dragged my feet so much about reading it but I have.

Well there goes savoring the book. The plot moves quickly enough to pull you in. I’ll share more thoughts when I finish.

I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying this. I’ve cried and laughed in the same paragraph. Im trying to savor this read, but we’ll see how quickly I read it.

I’m really enjoying this so far, more than I enjoyed Tender is the Flesh. Perhaps I’ve found a new favorite author?

Rereading this since I initially read it when I was very young. Reminding me how much I enjoy Victorian horror

Read the first few chapters via the preview thing and fell in love. Real fun read. It’s very show, don’t tell and I just love that as a reader.

I’ve gotten to some science gravy parts that I can’t grasp, no matter how well written it is. I’m still enjoying myself, but I do have to think more than usual (lol)

Okay I’m hooked

The first few chapters feel a lil heavy to get through. Found the flow of the book tho and enjoying the set up so far. I’ve been getting lil hints of romance in this book and there’s nothing I love more than sci fi romance.

(Of course I saw the show first.)

Finally a whisper of the writing from the first two books. I’m engaged with the story and don’t want to stop. There’s fewer repeated phrases. I know Blair is a good writer, her first two books is proof. Maybe that’s why this books is so disappointing, knowing how GOOD Blair *can* write.

“Jaw cocked to the side” is another overused phrase. Every 15 pages, on average, “disappeared in a flash of light” is used. I’m no editor, or even proofreader. I’m not even picky about genres I read. I could even ignore some plot holes. I really wish Blair could have sprung for a more in depth editor.

This book really really really could have used a more thorough edit. Flash of light is so frustratingly overused. Why is Gerarda part of every damn scene for no reason?

I love comparing books to their screen adaptations. Horns was a pretty good movie, so I’m curious to see how the source material is.

So far, I enjoy the authors writing style. Plot moves along at a good pace, well fleshed characters, good scene descriptions.

I’m 25 pages in and feeling frustrated. I don’t expect perfect grammar by any means, but there is a massive overuse of “flash of light” and “tendrils.” I really wish the author would get in touch with an in-depth editor. The story is weakened by repeated phrases. The first book was rife with it, but the second and third less so.

Not a terrible read. The first few chapters were hard to get into, but after that it’s been easier to read.

I **know** it’s nitpicking. If you’re going to mention fashion of a specific era, make sure it’s accurate. 1820s fashion did not have tight lacing, even in the most fashion forward circles. Tight lacing corsetry isn’t fashionable until late 1840s at the earliest.

I’m really sad to finish this wonderful series. This is one of the first fantasy series that felt like it was written for me.

I’ve been reading this slowly, really taking the time to savor. Reading from Arrens POV has done nothing to make him a likable character for me. (He reminds me of Griffith from Bezerk, iykyk)

Otherwise, I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Some technical things like tools of war or strategy interrupt my reading flow, but that’s only bc I’m not very knowing of those things.

There’s been a sharp left turn into ya romance. It’s not awful, maybe would enjoy more if the characters were adults.

Plot has picked up quite a lot. Usually I don’t like POV switches in a book, but they’re great in this one

The plot has picked up. Has hunger games vibes. I also didn’t realize this was YA until about 2nd or 3rd chapter. I’m not disappointed by any means.
