Wow, this book wastes no time. There's fast paced and then there's this!

How has Swann in Love escaped being updated and adapted into a modern high school drama/farce? It's crying for it. Or perhaps it already has, but only in France?

Having finished a book about a Revolution's victims (The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree) now I'm reading about Revolutionaries *as* victims, it seems.

Gutted by the ghost parade in chapter five, nearly drowning a city in their tears with just 5000 people. Can't not think of hundreds of thousands of ghosts marching to mar-a-lago to give TFG an even deeper bath 😪

Already really admiring the prose of the English translation and... the translator is anonymous. Out of safety concerns. This world doesn't deserve whoever they are 😪

Always a bit disappointing when a book that's tightly confined to a handful of character points of view suddenly adds another POV in the last bit. I'd have liked to have Sasha as a POV all along, and this just reminds me of that lack. It would have been difficult to keep some secrets back if he had been a POV character, but since he's really pretty radically open, not even close to impossible. Sigh.

I got a theory or two about this here baby, I tell you what.

The audio format really calls attention to certain authorial tics, like in this case, the noir- writer's habit of subject-free sentence fragments appearing as sentences, usually several in a row. It's getting a little irritating. Even Hammett and Chandler only used them sparingly, I think, but here it's all "Washed his hands. Looked in the mirror. Spat in the sink. Coughed up some phlegm." Etc.

Loving the good old noir/detective angle for continuing to explore Ambergris. Leaves lots of room for things to keep getting weirder. Hoping they do!
