The audio format really calls attention to certain authorial tics, like in this case, the noir- writer's habit of subject-free sentence fragments appearing as sentences, usually several in a row. It's getting a little irritating. Even Hammett and Chandler only used them sparingly, I think, but here it's all "Washed his hands. Looked in the mirror. Spat in the sink. Coughed up some phlegm." Etc.
