On this audio re-read, I'm realizing the best comparison for this trilogy might be to Gene Wolfe, if Wolfe decided to tackle post-colonial historical fantasy. I'm especially hung up on all the Williams. Is Pete Ishmael's father? Or vice versa? What's Este's relationship to Modesta? WTF is up with Sidrus, knowing his fate as a grotesque [REDACTED]? How does Meybridge and Gull's story and real life invention relate?

I've enjoyed the audio version of the third book so much that I wanted to experience the other two in this form. I think it's better this way!
