This is a strange story. I really can’t make my mind up about it or what it’s trying to do. It’s got me thinking though, so that’s worth something.

Started off so strong, could be another 5 stars. However, it overexplained the rules of Hell a little too much—got it the first time, bud!

I’m not loving this narrative voice: “As young readers like to know ‘how people look’, we will take this moment to give them a little sketch of the four sisters…”

Holy $€*#%! The reveal was a little expository, but it was a *good* reveal!

There’s obviously something wrong with Howard and there’s obviously something to do with mushrooms and mould. Is it too out there to guess Howard isn’t human and he *is* fungi?

I haven’t got any guesses as to any part of this mystery wahhhh, but the horror is very effective!!

The Hayden/Alice romance is dragging its feet a little, maybe I’m just waiting for the third act breakup? The Margaret Ives story more interesting, loving that!!

This doesn’t seem like a happily ever after type of book, but I at least want Francis and Noemí to kissssssss 😣

I think comparing this book to Lovecraft, Brontë, and du Maurier’s work was a mistake because it’s not on their level prose-wise——HOWEVER! it’s still very strong on a setting and tone level!!

The racial elements of this book have aged worse than the first. Still, you can tell LJ Smith intends for this to be a very positive portrayal of African Culture!!

I’ll double check when I’m finished reading but this armour is far too advanced and expensive for King Arthur’s era: fitted steel cuirasses and plate pauldrons belong roughly eight or nine centuries later (I think), while gold filigree on the edges sounds VERY impractical in combat.

These ‘tense’ action scenes just don’t do anything for me because I don’t care about these characters, because the story has done nothing to earn me caring about them

I could see some people being upset with this plot development, since it is set up like it’s going to be enemies/rivals-to-lovers.
As an enemies-to-lovers HATER, I’m so glad my romance novel is moving towards the actual romance quickly <3

characters have no interiority, world is anachronistic, plot is generic and guessable, the caps-lock demon is corny.

Should have read the summary. I do not enjoy enemies-to-lovers, but I do love Emily Henry so she might be able to win me over
