Chapter 14 done.

This chapter is great and lowk boring me but very informative. Also the whole asiatic mode of production thing is incorrect.

Chapters 11, 12, & 13. Chapter 12 for me was definitely the most revealing in terms of understanding the internal laws of capitalist development and movement.

Chapter ten finished

Listening to at work. I probably should save this to actually read but who cares. Main thing I’m noticing so far is that Hobsbawm is an excellent stylist. A quote I particularly liked regarding the provincial towns in which most urban populations actually lived:

“But these were also the towns out of which the ardent and ambitious young men came to make revolutions or their first million; or both.”

Power outage at the factory so I had time before work because of the late start. Chapters 4 & 5.

“In truth, however, value is here the subject of a process, in which, while constantly assuming the form in turn of money and commodities, it changes its own magnitude, throws off surplus-value from itself considered as original value, and thus valorizes itself independently.” pp.255

Listening to this at work. The main parts of the book that I couldn’t get into the first time I tried to read this I’ve gotten through. That was mainly information about general changes in things like farm size, family organization, and changes in astronomical science. The coverage of alchemy and magic and how those could result in real science advancement. Now onto hard history and war.
