I've grown quite fond of Rachel and her non-platonic non-romantic life partner.

I fluctuate between thinking Borne is adorable and thinking Borne is clearly the work of a middle-aged man trying entirely too hard to make something cute in a way that I cannot make myself unaware of (sorry, Jeff, ily).

I really don't rock with this narrative voice so far. I don't know if it is an issue with Rachel herself or just the breezey, quick timeline thing Jeff is doing, but whatever it is, I don't like it.

Listen, the writing is truly beautiful, just stunning, but what I have learned in my recent personal reading renaissance is that I truly hate the overuse of short (1-2 sentence) paragraphs. A little here or there for style is great! Having that just be what the book is? Not so much. If beating short paragraphs to death is a crime, this book is serving forever.

This isn't the best book I've ever read; some lines can be kind of corny, but after enduring the Monet-style world building and plot delivery of The Locked Tomb books, it is healing something inside of me to read about a world and magic system that I don't need to read Reddit than theories on in order to comprehend.

Is this the best book I've ever read? No, some descriptions and lines are pretty corny. That being said, this book is healing me after suffering through three straight books worth of Tasmyn Muir's writing.

I love understanding the world and the plot and the characters without needing to read a fan theory on Reddit. It's so fun!
