Got a bit dry (then again we are in the desert) and now it’s gotten interesting. Hillerman’s writing is very gritty and takes some time to adapt. But I’m liking where this is going. The almost-DNF book has me looking forward to more Hillerman books already.

Can’t put this book down!

I’m liking this bit I’m not loving it. It’s taking me several weeks to just make it this far and while I’m reading much better books. I know it gets better and I’ve got the other books in the series all lined up.

This is a masterpiece.

Very early and I’m loving this story! I like the format and the prose!

Oh, Cicely. Also, Mrs. Cowley is my hero. This is a good book and goes back and forth between characters. Good format. Writing is beautifully simple, descriptive, emotional. It’s like we are there on that tragic winter night in Richmond. Also, it’s Richmond!

That woman is crazy!

The story unfolds in a beautiful and tragic way. The vague writing has transformed into illustrious scenery in the mind. It took a while but it has become more tantalizing and the dark forest is even more foreboding — “just one more chapter, just one more chapter.” Duncan, why are you doing this?!
