having such a weird experience w this book bc it puts me in such a shit mood. first of all i miss partying. second i cant read abt intelligent women losing their minds over greasy men anymore. most importantly i relate to almost none of the events that happen in the book but it somehow managed to drag me into the teenage feeling of doom and trappedness and there being absolutely no room for you to do or be anything

kinda really upset (positive).... all of nila's pain is expressed so beautifully and her escapes from it are either annoying or infuriating

no wonder nila wants to die bc her life is filling me w dread too. hold on tho nila i love u

i haven't heard of octavia bright before but the approach she took for this anthology feels different from the other ones so far and i am def interested in checking out more of her work

first of all, this girl is NOT being a good girl. second, i don't really like reading about nihilistic hedonism because i feel like i'm doing youth wrong or smth by not hooking up with strangers from techno clubs who give me drugs but i'm going to stick to this book bc i can sense a lot to be unpacked. also, excellent excellent prose.

LOVE the glass essay as always but the following poems are turning out to be really different from what i expected given the glass essay — it makes sense, the stylistic simplicity and all, but the poems are so brief (compared to the glass essay) and i had a hard time getting into the truth about god. tv men is more interesting but also not really holding me.... might just return to this later

i dont know.. im kinda deeply invested (i started getting into it around page 70) but i dont like the dialogue. i don't know if i dislike the exposition, or if the descriptions are so good that the exposition pales in comparison. i get the sense that vuong was having a hard time getting the voice of the narrator. but also im like really into the book

so far im enjoying the descriptions a lot more than the narrative portions of it, which i guess makes sense for a poet
