- i feel like i never understood why Everybody (liberals, conservatives, neoliberals, whoever else) was So Mad about bureaucracy... perhaps because i was not an Adult Involved in Bureaucracy but now i get it. it's a performance and yet very real self-surveillance..!!

- not sure how i feel about the characterization of mental illness, like i don't think fisher's wrong but it also seems willfully ignoring of some dimensions
- the way the classroom is described... if only he knew how much worse it was going to get... unfortunately i am glad to have grown up the way i did

LOVE the glass essay as always but the following poems are turning out to be really different from what i expected given the glass essay — it makes sense, the stylistic simplicity and all, but the poems are so brief (compared to the glass essay) and i had a hard time getting into the truth about god. tv men is more interesting but also not really holding me.... might just return to this later

did NOT expect a critique of fifty shades of grey in the middle of my critical theory omg...

wow…….. torrey peters is amazing at writing kinda shitty people to whom unwarrantedly bad things happen. ive been reading so much about pigs yesterday and today. “the chaser” might be one of my favorite things in a while

imagine you read three really corny things happen in a row followed immediately by the most beautiful paragraph youve seen in years and this just keeps happening on repeat

i dont know.. im kinda deeply invested (i started getting into it around page 70) but i dont like the dialogue. i don't know if i dislike the exposition, or if the descriptions are so good that the exposition pales in comparison. i get the sense that vuong was having a hard time getting the voice of the narrator. but also im like really into the book

so far im enjoying the descriptions a lot more than the narrative portions of it, which i guess makes sense for a poet

pretty funny that i'm reading this right after on freedom. idk how to explain it. pretty glad to find that my brain has gotten bigger bc when i tried to read this two years ago i just could not and now it's still not easy but at least i can do it

that was the first titular essay! probably like my 27th time reading that one bc it's on the internet. as sal once said, it's like how to write an essay 101 except nobody can do it like leslie jamison. excited to revisit the other essays that i have only read once each
