the crystal edifice is basically his way of saying: people should be perfect, predictable, rational… but if they were, life would be dead and unbearably empty.

if humans ever got everything they asked for, they wouldn’t be satisfied. once our work are done and all problems are solved, we’d grow restless, maybe even angry. give people paradise and they will still complain. utopia is a joke. it’s quite a bleak take on human nature but it’s not that far off.

he’s right about reducing humans to equations is suffocating. if you tell me my true interests are already calculated for me, it will start to feel like everything is predestined and i can’t make choices for myself. rational self interest conflicts with autonomy. people absolutely self sabotage on purpose

Every group seemed to believe that becoming fully human meant going through some kind of descent. Really cool how similar all these myths and teachings are even though they’re from different times and places. Mithras, Persephone, Odin, the Gnostics… it’s all about going through confusion or pain and coming out different. It’s like a universal pattern.
