i pray this isn't one of those thrillers where the main girl unknowingly sleeps with the villain or some shit I hate that fucking trope

the author lacks subtlety or nuance. there are ways to get your point across without making the "baddies" into scooby doo over the top villains. she really beats you over the head with what she's trying to do, it reads like it was written for YA audiences who struggle with reading comprehension.

this is set in new york? new york city new york? are we being serious? I thought the low reviewers were being sensitive but tbh - they are on to something.

the author uses an astounding amount of modern parlance and expectations for a biography of someone in the early 1900s. Interesting so far but very poorly written in that regard.
