So, yes, it *is* an extended advertisement for Billy Butlin’s holiday camp - and the great, kindly, rotund gentleman is even embroiled in the story - but it’s a joyous romp. School comedy as social history, infact. The edition in the Comedy Cottage library even has Gerald Campion in character from the TV series on the cover, so even more joyous.

Arguably the greatest Dolittle novel of them all. Fun and funny it zips along at a thrilling pace. And, in Dolittle’s attitudes and amendments of the treatment of circus animals, and fox-hunting, it is gleefully radical: satisfyingly forward-thinking. Also, if you love the Rex Harrison film, this is the source for the Sophie the seal sub-plot. Enjoy: for children of all ages. Even ones of 56!

Utterly extraordinary. One of those books you want to finish but never want to end. Huston’s motion pictures speak for themselves - on every level - but his technical thought process is here, alongside the location dilemmas, power struggles, and starry name-drops: and that includes pretty much every creative intellect of the 20th century.
