Kristian Powell is on page 78 of 312 of Rome in the Eighth Century: A History in Art (British School at Rome Studies)
Legitimately so captivating so far, an insane amount of artwork survives from the Eighth century just in the city of Rome alone!

Very good so far, there are still locks of her hair held in museums which is so cool to learn.

Very interesting thesis so far, I didn’t realize that the book is 40 years old but it seems like everything is still really reliable

He just went line by line explaining every detail of the Lord’s Prayer just for the explanation of “lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil” to be absent (I imagine that part no longer survives in any manuscript or the work of prose was never finished).

Charlemagne probably could read, he just wasn’t great at it. He started writing too late to have anything more than an adolescent writing level by modern standards. Also the way he started the chapter is so funny.

This whole time I thought that Abul Abbas was an unexpected gift to Charlemagne. It is so funny to imagine that he was obsessively sending out emissaries to the Caliphate with the hopes of procuring an elephant.
