I feel like it would take a lot of thinking and writing to put it into words, but I figured out why I don’t like Matthias. This story is heavily political, if the crows fail, they risk a war. Matthias’ people are at best complacent in genocide and at worst actively participating in it. You can’t cure that kind of cruelty with a romance b-plot. I find him interesting now, but that has to be said

That scene still makes me uncomfortable in the best way. It focuses on all the little details, while also painting a broad picture. Like the aliens are here and your mom is missing but we’re focused on the bug on the sandwich

Prefacing my reading with this: I hate romantasy. I have always hated romantasy. I have given it chance after chance, and given up over and over, because of one thing, usually: the men. I do not like romantasy men. They are clearly written to appear to something I’m not: a heterosexual woman. I just cannot find them attractive. But behold. This is romantacy without a man. I have hope.

As much as I love where this is going, I have to get this off my chest. I hate Matthias. He’s an entitled dickwad with seemingly no respect for himself or others. My opinions on Nina are getting worse by her being sympathetic towards him. “Oooh he’s irreplaceable” can they not find anyone else from his home country who’s less of an ass? If this man died I’d feel no pity because he has NO redeeming qualities 😭

I love Kaz, he’s a badass and a weirdo and a schemer and those are the best things a character can be

I hate Matthias, he acts like every broody Gale-wannabe who’s ever made me roll my eyes

The one perk of Matthias existing is now we can see how stupid his archetype of broody bad boy looks from others’ POVs (very)

Okay, that might be a little harsh. I fear I’m missing some of the context around why he’s here. But he seems so insufferable. These people saved his life and he’s grumbling about patriotism like a total dork. Not to mention Nina clearly likes him and he won’t shut up about killing her, so either she’s a total fool or he just sucks. Nina get better taste!

The prose is beautiful but all I can think is “who tf are these people”
Who is a Matthias and why is he relevant. We have a hostage to rescue from an inescapable prison and we’re doing a secondary prison break for this traumatized angry guy?

Okay, I like where this is going but I am having a hard time keeping track of the characters… this is part of an extended universe so maybe they’re from other books?

I’ve been so hungry for a book that actually lets itself be an action/political drama/crime drama/ANYTHING drama as more than just the backdrop for something less interesting. This is exciting. This is solid. There are actual motives and secret backstories being alluded to, and to top it all off, there’s no love triangle B plot distracting me from the badassery!

I feel like I should've read the other books by this author before because who are these people. What are we talking about. I thought you could read this as a standalone? Could be this is just the style, though
Side note I’m going in blind, if there’s romance I’m shaving off a star. I want crime and violence, dammit

The flashback art is fabulous, I feel like the whole book would’ve benefitted form black outlining/“dark mode” pages because the colors popped so well!

It’s cute so far, the art has a pleasant vibe to it. I’m a little confused about the worldbuilding/backstory, it’s kind of a cozy modern fantasy, while also being seemingly under the control of villains? And being a villain is like an aspirational thing?
I do like the modern fantasy vibes and the protagonist is pretty cool :)

Is pendragon the best book you’ll ever read? Not exactly. But is it fun, engaging, and interesting enough to keep you from putting down? Yes.

Having fun but how tf is Bobby writing these letters in real time? He doesn’t have any parchment!
Also how come every person of color is described as looking of African descent. If we’re going for an Africa inspired fantasy world it’s fine, but they just keep saying it…
Then again I’m pretty sure the first toe are the same person, the third might be

I don’t know why, but I kind of want to make a storyboard for this scene. That’s a sign that the story is coming together nciely, even if I prefer the first-person narration. It starts rocky, but it’s getting better!

This is whimsical and all but can the author please learn a synonym for “note.” Yes we get it we can hear music notes but can you describe it in any other way ohhhhh my gosh
