Interesting start to the book, covering the period of "Roman Pre-History". This starts with the founding myth of Romulus, through the regal period, all the way up the founding of the Roman Republic. Beard tells a much more ambiguous story as opposed to the "aggrandized" Roman version, a slow build to a true city, a possible conquest by neighbors, and warring medieval fiefdoms.
