The starting sentence is an actual masterpiece. The story which follows slow and the characters somewhat poorly portrayed. Enjoyable at times, yet mostly more mechanical and predictable than I could find enjoyable.
Remarkable of course thinking of the socio-historical context where the novel was written: despite me not enjoying it much, it's a noteworthy piece of art, for the time.
